the rarely photographed pirates

You would think that since a photographer has been taking our pictures for the past 2 months (long, interesting story that I will tell and show photos from at some point!), that the girls would be good at getting their picture taken. But no, this photo was like pulling teeth to get:

They mostly looked like this at first:

We took the girls around the block in their super cheap pirate suits and they were so excited, yelling "Happy Halloween" to everyone. Seeing them dressed alike really did make them feel like one clump of a child, which was strange and sad. Sad because a lot of parents of twins do this and I think it must really hurt their ability to see their children as individuals.

We didn't get much candy because we only stopped at 3 houses and our own door man gave them some, but when we got in, Anya thought she was supposed to eat it all right then. Rachi ate her small portion happily, but not Anya. She screamed and kicked because she wanted all of it! It made me wonder if one is born with food addiction or if she was actually just hungry. It is strange to see these two children, identical to people who don't know them, act so completely different in the face of a ghost bucket of chocolate.

"How can you tell them apart?" people ask me. Next time, I will answer... "You got a candy bar, I'll show you."

some thoughts on remembering and time

It is 3 p.m. and I am trying to get the girls to nap again. It will not work and they will not sleep and my daily naps are like the dinosaurs, gone gone gone.

A breeze comes through the window as it is finally fall, my best alive time. It blows Rachi's hair and she says, "I windy, mama." It is cold on my cheek and smells like camping and I am suddenly transported to a camping trip that I took when I was 18 or so. So much went on on that trip, weird friend stuff and someone built me a small scale model of Stonehenge on the camp site and I still have the picture of 18 year old me sitting so happy, teary eyed next to the little henge.

It is rare that I am so completely reminded of and transported to another place and while I love this, that our minds can do this, it also makes me sad. I wonder if this is how it must feel to be very very old. To have 90 or 100 years of memories stored up and then a breeze comes and takes you back to another place and another you. But it is still this you, but this time and place are so so long gone. I wonder if the more life memories you have stored up, the more this happens. And perhaps this is why very old people always seem to be living in the past.

Sometimes I hate that time is linear. I want it to be a swirly wobble. But our little brains couldn't handle this, so we build our clocks and our TV schedules and we live our lives.

My friend, Doug, once told me that in our lifetimes we will cure death. I think he said it like that. That we will cure everything and people wouldn't die like they used to. That we will live to be much much older than we do now. I don't think I could bare this. I don't think I would want to be 150, with 150 years of memories all swirling around in my brain, ready to pop up at any time. Ready to remind me of what I once had. I have never feared getting old, but I suppose I fear staying old forever. Like vampires. Being a vampire must be such a drag. It just goes on and on and on. Vampires are like grandpas, sitting around remembering and remembering.

Television Zombies, Episode 13: “The New A-Team”

Television Zombies, Episode 13: “The New A-Team”

This week, the regular Television Zombies crew is joined by their intrepid senior associate research executive via the technological marvel known as the “iPhone,” as they attempt to make sense of the news of the week and address two critical questions — what classic shows need to be remade for the post-9/11 era, and is it time to retire the 22-episode season? The answers may startle you. All this, plus Jeff and Tina’s great big Heroes theory and the true backstory of Mr. Smith and the Roach!

Austin Chronicle on Etsy and Me

Thanks to the Austin Chronicle Fashion Blog for writing about me today. Nora wrote a nice piece about the custom shirt that I made for her. She also gives a nice shout out to Etsy.com.

In turn, there is a piece about the piece on the Etsy Storque today.

And I suppose this blog post is a piece about the piece about the piece. :)

In other news, I didn't get into the Bust show. I am bummed. Oh well, the nice press makes up for it.

yls record

It is a record... Beth and I blogged three Etsy sellers over at the Yeti Loves Seamonster Blog today!

Don't forget to check this site. I totally love it.

bye bye cowboy

We took the girls to Malcolm X Park to see the ducks and water fall yesterday. We also saw some dogs. On the way out, a female police officer showed up on horseback. The girls got to pet Jack the horse and were really excited to see one so close. The police lady gave them stickers and it was pretty cool. When leaving, Rachi said to her, "Bye bye Cowboy."

This was just so funny. Of course anyone with a horse has got to be a cowboy.

Stories of Jack and the Cowboy we told over and over again all night long.

talk of christmas ghosts cards

These are my new Xmas cards. I am really happy with them. They are really stressful to some people, I could tell when I saw some people read them this past weekend at a show that I sold at. I like that. But they are really how I feel about the holidays. I miss my grandparents so much, but I hope that some day we will make new, better holiday memories. I know you have all been at this place.

In other holiday card news, I have sold an enormous amount of Zombie Plague cards and I have to decide how many more to make as well as get printed. I am almost out of the 312 that I made and the 500 that I printed. The trick is that the more I make and get, the cheaper they are for the customer. Anyway, like last year, you can totally pre-order these if you like or even just put in your order for later. Just email me and tell me how many you think are you going to need. I just sent out an order for 50 today!!!

And the little Zombie Plague Ornament is also a big surprise hit. People have asked me to sell them in packs of 3, 5 and 10! These are all up in my shop. Just click SHOP above. I am also looking for real life stores that might want to buy some of these wholesale. They will sell fast and I just love making them. I am working on Mr. Z felt brooches right now. How funny will they be?!

about how i hate cats

I blogged over at Yeti Loves Seamonster today about how I hate cats and also about an awesome kitten skirt for little girls. Check it out.

who's afraid of the big bad wolf?

Ever since Jeff started singing the big bad wolf song to the girls (you know, "I'm going to huff and puff and blow your house down."), Rachi has started to call him Bad Wolf. Like, "Bad Wolf, get me juice!" or "Where's Bad Wolf going?" This is just hilarious and kind of strange. First, it is a Dr. Who Season 1 reference, since the Bad Wolf was the big bad for the season. Second, it is just slightly kooky for a little tiny girl to call her daddy Bad Wolf with such glee. It has seriously become his new name.

Because of this, I thought about having the girls dress as Little Red Riding Hood for Halloween. But with more thought, I realized that it was just too victim-y to dress like Little Red Riding Hood. Then I thought about Riding Hood with big swords under their capes, but two year olds and big swords doesn't make for a good day.

So, I think we are going to be cow girls. We have hats and giant My Little Ponies... just wondering if I should add lassos to the mix.

Television Zombies, Episode 11: “Mr. Smith and the Roach”

Television Zombies, Episode 11: “Mr. Smith and the Roach”

This week, the Televison Zombies team reconvenes to discuss the debuts of Journeyman, Bionic Woman, Chuck, Reaper and The Office. Jeff proposes an alternate universe with a completely different line-up of Fall shows, and we finally learn about the connection between Shakespeare and a classic show of the 1980’s.

and i still love ricky gervais

iTunes gave me a little present this evening as I sat down to get some web work done. A new Ricky Gervais Podcast. I was instantly reminded of why I love to podcast myself and why I think our Television Zombies podcast is so good. Laughter. We laugh and laugh and this is rad.

This week's show is late, as is everything for me this week. But it is seriously good. It will be available Friday morning. Jeff and I have really built something rad with Television Zombies and I haven't blogged about this much. Not only is it a podcast, but it is turning into a really cool little site/blog. Not only are Jeff, Jake and I blogging over there, but now we have Jonah and Chris writing. I didn't know so many people in my circle of friends had the same taste in television as Jeff and I do. From their wonderful work on the blog to the listeners' emails that we have been getting, I think we have struck a cord with people. There are folks out there who want to watch good TV and not mindless cops, doctor or lawyer shows!

Anyway... I like it when new projects get a life of their own and succeed. I can see myself doing this project for years to come and this is comforting. I think some day I would like to talk for a living, into a microphone, in a dark room, laughing with my friends.

Anyway, check out the writing on Television Zombies and also search iTunes for Ricky Gervais.

More tired than ever, but Crafty Bastards was rad!

In my post Crafty Bastards exhaustion, my blog is suffering. This makes me sad because she is my first love. So I am vowing to write everyday, even if it is just a sentence or a picture. I am newly here.

Speaking of Crafty Bastards, I have to say this was just amazing. I got to talk to and meet some nice people and hear great stories about leaving panda poop shirts in hotels in Spain, got great recommendations for books to read and talk to old and new friends. My brother, Mikey, came all the way from San Diego to help me run my booth and he was such a help! There were often so many people in that small space that I had to just walk away! I am sorry if I missed you. We sold out of medium shirts and as well as the zombie ties! But I still have lots and lots of other stock, which I have slowly been adding to the my Etsy shop. I literally have hundreds of shirts left in different designs and sizes, so do email me if you want me to look for something for you.

My sister's TV bags were a big hit! I have been seeing pictures of them pop up on blogs lately. :) We sold out of Pam and Jim, I think, but didn't sell one Michael or Charlie! Can you believe it??? We are holding the rest of the Elloh painting bags for upcoming shows, but the other bags are going on the Etsy shop. If you want to get one of the Elloh print bags, just email me (they are $35 plus shipping). We still have Hurley, Michael, Dwight, Charlie, Sawyer and David Brent (all from the Office and Lost!).

Here are some pictures from the day. Some of these were taken by my friend Audrey, some from Valerie and some from the Washington Citypaper flickr pool.

Zombie Plague Holidays table of goodies. The zombie plague xmas tree ornaments were the biggest seller for the day. I learned that people would want more than one at a time! So I will be selling these in packs of 3 soon. For now you can get them in my Etsy shop one at a time.

Me and Jeff:

Mikey:

Hurley bag:

Sawyer and Michael bags:

Pam!

Charlie:

Ghost shirt with double print:

I think that all of my shirts are going to start to look more like this one with double prints. They are much more work, but are lovely.

New Zombies are the new Bunnies shirt:

That is it for now! No pictures of Lisa Seamonster! I have applied to the Bust Craftacular in NYC in December and I am excited/afraid to even get in. If I do, it surely will be an adventure as Lisa will be coming with me.

Thanks again to everyone who stopped by to see me at CB and to everyone who bought stuff. I hope you love what you got!

Check back every day for blogs, I am totally almost surely back.

what does daddy do at work?

"My daddy is at work," Rachi says as I push both of them on the baby swings. I have mastered this motion, one arm pushing one girl, the other pushing the other girl. I am a big machine, manufacturing windy hair and "weeeees".

The girls are closer than ever to the leaves above my head.

"They clapping for me, mama," Anya says.

"Yes, the leaves love you," I say.

"What does your daddy do at work?" I ask both girls.

"I don't know." They both say fast because they do have an answer, but they always say I don't know first when they aren't sure.

"Make things," Anya says. This makes me smile because they see mama making things and think that this is what people do for work. Make things.

"What does Daddy make at work?" I ask, still pushing the swinging windy-haired girls.

"Butterflies!" Anya smiles and yells.

"Giant butterflies!" Rachi adds.

"Yes. Daddy makes giant butterflies at work," I agree. "What a wonderful job."

"What do you want to do when you go to work?" I ask.

"Take pictures," Anya says. "Like Balerie."

I smile at this. Valerie is the photojournalism student who is doing her senior thesis project on us this fall. She takes lots and lots of pictures of us and this has made an impact on Anya.

My two year olds want to be photojournalists when they grow up. Their daddy makes giant butterflies at work and the leaves are clapping for them. I don't often feel this, but I must be doing something right.

still here

I am still recovering from Crafty Bastards. I have never been this tired, ever. I am also thinking about the holiday season and what I can do to spread the message of the coming zombie plague. I am also missing podcasting and can't wait to get back to that this week.

There is so much I haven't blogged, like how we love to wear our princess kitty shirts with digital camo shorts, looking like little club DJs and how we saw Elvis Costello eating in the window of an Indian joint in Adams Morgan in the middle of the day and how we waved at him like he was a neighbor and he smiled and waved back and how I have been maintaining my weight with stress eating and how it feels horrible (but at least not gaining!). Life has been stressful, I actually made 410 shirts for Crafty Bastards and now it is over and everyone was rad and the show was awesome and how do you continue when the best day of the year is over?

I am still here. Photos coming super soon! For now, check my shop (link above) to see what I have been adding.
