"i am the captain of a great ship
and these are my passengers"

« have i mentioned, this is hard? | Main | you are starting today. i am starting today. today is ours. »

this is a happy family

It is rare that we all get our picture taken together. But here we are. We don't even look like we are fighting a war. Photos likes these make me wonder if things really aren't as hard as I think they are. Do that. Take a picture of your life. I bet it will show you new things.

I just got upset when I read this in a confirmation email:

Pickup Date: 4/21/2006
Adults: 1
Children: 0
Service Type: SHARED RIDE VAN SERVICE
Airport: IAD - WASHINGTON, D.C.DULLES
Airline: JET BLUE

CHILDREN: 0! CHILDREN: 0! CHILDREN: 0! CHILDREN: 0!

Crap, I will be gone from my babies for 5 days! I am more worried about the missing them than anything else. Like, will it be overwhelming to the point that i need to get back on a plane and come home early? Could it hurt that much? And then poor Jeff. Poor poor Jeff. He will have a grandma to help him for the weekend, but then Monday and Tuesday he is all alone with two little girls and one dog and god knows how many mice. I hope he still loves me when I get home.

It isn't like I am going for fun, as I have to work 8 to 8 each day. But the fact that I get to read on the plane and sleep the night is something. I am hoping it kicks me in the butt and I come home a whole new me. Hope is hope is hope.

i think both sets of pictures combined truly show what real parenting is like. it's both. great and then draining, wonderful then overwhelming. it's a wild ride.
i just got back from a wedding in mexico and my first time away from ferris. 4 days!!! i cried quietly to myself as we hit the runway ready to head to mexico.
but once i was there, i was okay... and so was he. he didn't even seem to notice that i'd been gone. this was a wonderful to know he'd been very happy the whole time , but a small part of me thought, "hey, buddy! i'm with you 24/7, you eat from my body and you didn't even notice 4 days of my absence?"

you will be fine. you may need to breathe deeply and cry a bit when you get on the plane, but you will be fine. the girls will be fine. and when you are finally home again that first smile from them will more than make up for how much you missed them!

oh. and go dye your hair!:) it *will* make you feel better...a little thing can go along way in making "you" feel less invisible.

Yay! I am so glad that you put up some more pictures- i have been in Pakistan for the last ten days- I came back friday and I have missed reading about your family. Having no internet is rubbish! The girls are so big and cute and they seem to me, an outsider, to be looking more and more alike with each photo! loving you all!

Back again! - i love the picture of you and the girls- it should be called 'sprawled motherhood' you all look so relaxed and stretched out. If i have kids i want to be a sprawled mummy- it looks horrible when mothers and children are so pristeenly dressed and they are all sitting up sraight backed- if i have kids i want to be happy and sprawled and covered in chocolate and paint and evidence of activity. I'm pretty messy as it is anyway..;)

love the pictures. you are a vision in magenta. and is it just me, or do the girls have jeff's hairline!

you are going to be great in california. and when you come back, big messy drooly babysmiles to greet you.

miss you!

Hey Sister,

It was really nice to spend some time with you this past weekend. It is too bad that we did not have more time. I had fun and so did Sarah. I have the feeling that I will have to fly back to Maryland if I ever want to see the rest of our family. I can't wait to see you Jeff and the babies in June when we come back for the wedding. I hope that for a few nights you got a good sleep.

What did you end up reading? Hope it was enjoyable!

mikey is the best brother of all time.

booska... i took your recommendation of city of saints and madmen. i also took along the timetravelers wife. i started both, but ended up sleeping more than reading. i DID watch two movies, though. i will talk about that later.
